After 25 years

Number One, After 25 Years he Said
It took 25 years for them to get there.
They won.
One extra breath.
One extra moment.
One extra thought.
One person.
Many people make mistakes.
We all make mistakes.
We all are human.
It is what you do afterwards.
It was in a truck.
It was somewhere in Sanford, in the south, I believe.
The truck was torn apart.
He was injured.
He became a paraplegic then.
Good upper body.
No more legs.
That alcohol/drug use, that was the cause.
Now in a wheelchair.
The story did not end there.
25 years to win. I am glad. I am happy.
I hope I contributed.
I hope I contributed by saying something.
I said, stop the drug use.
I meant it.
Like always, it cost me.
It always costs me.
I stand alone.
But, they made it. It was a choice, it was purposeful.
A testimony. They won. Yes, THEY WON! God is good.
The choice could have been to END HIS LIFE.
Bitterness could have prevailed.
Stop it all. Vegetate. Stay home, do nothing. Collect that check.
No, it did not stop there. He has done so much with his life. He is an inspiration.
Not all choose the same. Not all have that capacity. Not all have that capability.
He is a mouth piece for the disabled. He is a champion for the disabled.
I am hoping that all drugs are at an end, for the team, for him.
The win represents a win; a coming together, Some sort of stance.
I am hoping I contributed in some way to that win.
Wheelchair basketball teams are often comprised of those that made mistakes.
Those that are now in a chair because of some almost deadly consequence.
They chose to use. That Puerto Rican now in a chair.
That white person, intelligent veteran, now in a chair smoking weed.
That 6’5 black person in a wheelchair, with fused hips and bones, chose to use, and continued to use.
But, there are the victories. Those that stopped. Those that changed. Those that did not let that be the end.
I am happy too that they won. I am hoping that what I did woke them up and made a difference.
I am hoping I contributed. But, at minimum I am glad. I am happy for them.
After 25 years.
Look at the legacy.
25 years past the initial disability. For 25 years, he touched people’s lives. For 25 years, he made a difference. That is great all by itself. Nothing can take that away.
Congrats to the team. Congrats to Triangle Thunder.
Congratulations.
The next step, new years, an encounter with God. That is my prayer.
